Introduction of RMS Chail: Rashtriya Military School Chail located in the picturesque Himachal Pradesh has the unique distinction of being India’s first Military school. Originally, Rashtriya Military schools were established as King George’s Royal Indian Military schools (KGRIMS) to take care of the education of the sons of soldiers in erstwhile British Indian army.

Brief History of Rashtriya Military School Chail

1. The school with its sister institution at Jhelum (Pakistan) came into existence after the First World War with a generous donation of Rs 2.5 lakhs from King George V’s Patriotic Fund.  The foundation stone of the school was laid by the then Prince of Wales in Feb 1922 and the school started functioning at Jalandhar Cantt on 15 Sep 1925. 

The School was christened as King George’s Royal Indian Military School and was later renamed as King George’s Royal Indian Military College (KGRIMC).

2. This institution was founded with the aim of imparting free education to the sons of JCOs, NCOs and OR to prepare them for various Army Examinations including the Indian Special Certificate of Education.  The entire curriculum was based on Military requirements with English as medium of instruction.

3. The strength of the school was 250 and the staff consisted mostly Military personnel. During the World War-II the school was designated as College. One hundred more boys (now called cadets) were admitted under the expansion scheme. The conditions of admission were relaxed to accommodate the near relatives of Army Personnel and admission was thrown open to all branches of Armed Forces. 

The college was affiliated to the Punjab University for Matriculation and Intermediate examinations.  The college was renamed as King George’s School and shifted to NOWGONG (Bundel khand) in August 1952 where it was housed in Old Kitchner College buildings.

4. The school was renamed again as Chail Military School with effect from 01 Jan 1966, Military School Chail from 1996 and now as Rashtriya Military School Chail wef 25 Jun 2007.

5. Motto:-The Motto of the School is “ SHEELAM PARAM BHUSHNAM” which means in English “CHARACTER IS THE GREATEST VIRTUE”.

Admission process of RMS Chail

RMS Chail accepts both Boys and Girls via a Central Eligibility Test (CET) organised every year in December. Students sit for entry in class 6 and class 9 via a national level entrance exam. Dabad Academy specialises in entrance exam coaching for Rashtriya Military Schools.

Routine of RMS Chail

Headed by a Lt Col rank officer as the school Principal, RMS Chail follows strict military discipline. Day starts with PT, followed by a variety of academic and extracurricular activities which are designed to build Officer Like Qualities in young cadets.

A Normal day of the cadet starts with morning P T / parade under the strict guidance of qualified PT instructors from Army Physical Training Corps (APTC).  This, followed by a wash and change and the breakfast, is a run-up for the classes that begin at 0830 hrs. Classes run up to 1400hrs with one  short interval  when  cadets are given light refreshments, served centrally. After the classes, they go for lunch.

 The time after 1400hrs  is used very creatively and fruitfully under the guidance of the staff. All the cadets take part in games from 1530hrs to 1700hrs.  After a short break, students go for their  classes   for doing homework or remedial classes for weak cadets under the guidance of academic staff. On Saturdays, cadets are engaged  in  club activities and in pursuit of hobbies. The dinner at 2000 hrs is the last organised, mass activity of the cadets. Cadets are free to pursue their studies even after dinner and are expected to go to sleep latest by 2230h.
